Established in 2011, the Friends of the Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site advocates for and supports the Plaquemine Lock Historic Site through volunteer efforts and funding to:
• provide for the maintenance and care of the Lock site
• promote tourism and educate others on the Lock’s
extraordinary history
• assist with tour group visits
• encourage donations and endowments to the Lock
The FOL has completed numerous repairs and upgrades to the Lock site over its history, including re-sealing all windows to prevent leaks, repairing the steps to the bridge over the Lock, repairing exterior lighting, equipment repairs and purchases, grounds improvements, the purchase of Christmas decorations, and much more.
The FOL embarked on an effort in 2023 to engage our state and local officials and show the need for significant funding for a long-needed complete restoration of the Gary J. Hebert Lockhouse and significant improvements to the other facilities on the grounds. With the help of State Rep. Chad Brown and State Senator Caleb Kleinpeter, the Parish of Iberville, the City of Plaquemine and the La. Office of State Parks, the Friends of the Lock completed Phase I of the restoration in 2025 – a $1.2 million project to make significant repairs and upgrades to the Lockhouse and to install a modern, new exhibit.
The Friends group is now working toward raising funds for Phase II of the restoration – much needed repairs on the boathouse, landscaping and other grounds improvements.
